The U.S. government is ramping up efforts to secure the minerals that are critical to modern technology. The President of The United States, Mr. Donald Trump signed an executive order last week and declaring this a national emergency. They are funding grants and loans to kick-start the production and processing of these rare earth minerals. POTUS executive order is attracting some very big investors in the mining and processing of these critical minerals and is bringing a much-needed boost to the coal industry. The U.S. doesn’t have a reliable domestic source of these critical minerals causing around 80% of these minerals being imported from China. We have known for many years that rare-earth elements (REEs) are found in our coal seams. The Department of Energy has been successful in extracting these rare earth minerals from coal. Using coal and by-products of coal production from our enriched region, a chemical process called ion exchange can extract these Rare earth elements. This research done by the DOE’s National Energy Technology Laboratory found that the extraction process is not only cost-effective, but it is also environmentally friendly. With this executive order, we will be able to supply the markets domestically and be able to put a stop to the current Chinese dominance on global rare earth production.

Rare earth elements consist of 17 elements. These minerals are widely used in high-tech devices, automotive components, clean energy, other high-value materials, and our Great Nation’s Defense technologies. Rare earths are key in military communication systems, which is partially why the U.S. Department of Energy recently offered some grants to companies and declaring this a national emergency.  A secure, reliable, and sustainable domestic supply of REEs are essential to the Nation’s energy (solar panels and wind turbines), the automotive industry, electronics industries and is an important contributor to national security.
